ACCOMODATION

Safdarjung Hospital is still continuing in several barracks, which have outlived their life but are still in occupation for want of alternative accommodation.

Over the years as activities increased, newer specialty and super-specialty departments have come up. Hospital authorities added few multistory buildings according to suitability of space. As a result the different departments have come up expanding horizontally in a scattered manner spread over an area of 47 acres of land.

Moreover, just outside the boundary wall of the hospital premises, the hospital is surrounded by -
- Hawkers and footpath vendors on the two sides (Ring Road and Aurobindo
  Marg).
- Jhuggi clusters on the remaining two sides.

WATER SUPPLY

Safdarjung Hospital needs a supply of 3400 KL. Of water for maintenance of all the services smoothly and satisfactory sanitation and cleaning which is of paramount importance for a hospital. As against the requirement of 3400 KL, water availability is as under: -

* - As per our Engineers and Technical Experts the underground water level is rapidly decreasing in volume. Therefore, the tube wells are not yielding enough water.

Negotiations are in progress with the NDMC/MCD/DJB authorities and DGHS/Ministry of Health & F.W. for getting more supply of water.

SEWERAGE SYSTEM

The Safdarjung Hospital , as have been already mentioned started in army barracks with only 204 beds. Naturally, the underground sewer pipes are not big enough in diameter to cope with the present load of the hospital. This is one of the major factors, which causes frequent sewer line blocks hampering sanitation activities. Hospital authorities are getting the sewer pipes replaced by bigger dia pipes in phased manner, which will continue for over a period of several years.

If the new services proposed can be added in the tenth plan, the hospital can truly be one of the premier medical institutions in the Country.
