Safdarjung Hospital was founded during the Second World War in 1942 as a Base Hospital for the allied forces. It was taken over by the Govt. of India in 1954 under the Ministry of Health. It has grown over the years into one of the largest tertiary level multi disciplinary healthcare institutions in this part of the World. Based on the needs and developments in Medical Care the hospital has been regularly upgrading its facilities from diagnostic and therapeutic angles in all the specialties. The hospital when started in 1942 had only 204 beds, which has now increased to 1531 authorized beds. The hospital provides medical care to millions of citizens not only of Delhi and the neighboring states but also to people of neighboring Countries.

The infrastructure present and the facilities provide are at par if not better than any medical college in the country. The hospital can also boast offer highly qualified and competent faculty. The hospital has been a center of training and teaching of Post-graduate students of the University of Delhi since 1962. In 1973 the hospital the hospital faculty constituted the clinical faculty of the University of College of Medical Sciences to which it was attached till 1990. Even when the college was shifted to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital at Shahdara, Delhi, the hospital still continues to impart Post-Graduate training in various specialties and super specialties. The hospital is also a center for training of interns from various institutions in the country and abroad. Ex-students of the hospital have been excelling in the country and abroad and have done the institution proud.

Today the hospital provides state of the art facilities in the 34 clinical and para-clinical divisions. Running along side its regular clinics are 45 special clinics, which offer comprehensive care to all patients with specific needs. These special clinics help in creating a high level of awareness amongst the patients and benefit the medical community as well and thus widen the health knowledgebase in the society.

This "Kalpa-Vriksha" of clinical medicine has borne many branches in recent years. The hospital today has perhaps the finest respiratory and sleep laboratory in the country. More than 19000 patients attended the respiratory medicine OPD and the department is actively involved in organizing professional & academic meets at the National level.Time is precious. Many surgical and medical departments of the hospital have been quick to adopt the concept of "Same Day" medical and surgical treatment. More and more patients are allowed to tread back home a few hours after their surgical procedure is over and quick medical treatment is given to needy patients. This has been possible with the introduction of endoscopically guided minimally invasive surgical techniques. The greatest service of human kind introduced to provide free facilities to poor and needy patients for open heart surgery to the tune of 8 to 9 cases per week at the CTVS department of Safdarjung Hospital is a commendable achievement in last two years. The department is actively involved in teaching & training of post-graduate in Surgery. It also arranged several academic meets including and International Symposium & Workshop on "Changing Face of Cardiac Surgery" which involved LIVE teleconferencing and live telecast of Operative procedures by eminent cardiac surgeons. The establishment of laser unit for treatment of various eye disorders and an eye bank in the ophthalmology department of the hospital have been major achievements in the last two years. No medical institution can afford to do well today without an excellent back up from its para clinical departments. Department of Laboratory medicine is under immediate augmentation for support all the needs of super-specialty disciplines. The recent introduction of investigation for tumor markers, hormone-assays and immuno-haematological investigations is a giant leap towards provision of such services to the poor masses. A latest generation linear accelerator is under active consideration and an additional cobalt unit for cancer patients is being installed very shortly in the department of Radiotherapy. Some of the advanced services introduced in the department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation include multi-sensory electro-diagnostic unit, a sonopulse, dynation, balance master and laser. Remedial gymnastics, obesity control clinic, orthotic and prosthetic workshop and rural rehabilitation are other thrust areas of the department. The hospital would also establish a computerized network is essential and vital areas.
